06 - Knight Warrior A - Accidental voice - backdated to 20th, evening

[ It catches the end of some humming, as well as the sound of small paws and claws along the surface of the SFC and... a pot?

The humming is a quiet tune of some sort. It could, paired with words, be cheerful enough, the notes being hit probably down an octave from what they should be, but... Currently, it sounds ridiculously depressing.

Complete silence for a while after he's done humming, but for the faint sound of cloth to stone. ]

.... Still do not understand.. [ There's some traces of that sadness, but like his voice usually does, it doesn't sound too thick. It sounds less like Duke's talking to himself, and more like he's talking to someone. There's no reply, chittering or otherwise, so.. who? ]

Why? It does not make sense. Is fear that much of a motivator? Are they all so distrusting? You gave your word, I vouched, had your past actions not spoken enough....

Perhaps should begin to ask, here....

Promised to do nothing. Helped them, then they were scared enough....

Sometimes a promise... _{[He makes a small 'hmm' as he carefully goes over the words in his head. He's in a real pickle himself with 'promises' and he isn't sure how he feels about that.]}

...Sometimes a promise needs to have a slight detour. I don't exactly care for the thought of it, but sometimes it must be done to conquer a bigger obstacle in the way.

... So rather than risk the change of a promise, slay the maker of it, shortly after his actions preserve your race? [ Somewhat incredulous. Over anger. ]

An if he was needed to keep the preservation in check? Then what? Who would take over once you kill the man who made that promise? Who would lead your people?

An interesting question.

[ There seems to be a pause to consider this however. ]

Fear can indeed be a powerful enough motivator, given one finds the proper fear to trigger. Most beings have a primal fear, I find. Fear of the unknown, fear of power... perhaps even fear of oneself.

... Pity many are ruled by it.

Only the foolish wallow in their fear. Others choose to conquer it. Others still take this fear and wield it as a weapon to bind the weaker being back.

Those being ruled by fear tend to be easier than most to succumb to this.

Those who are already prone to jump at shadows react far more when told that those shadows can hurt them than those who are not.

Indeed. However, there is reason behind every shadow and always a way to dispel them. What lingers in the mind's eye however is another matter entirely.

Now, a question if I may. What prompted such a thought?

People fear what they don't understand, and it makes them do stupid, irrational things.

[ Hence his entire genocide. The only way to get rid of fear was to remove the basis for it - being different. ]

Humans can't stand knowing that there are people out there who aren't exactly like them.

[ And he doesn't think they can change. ]

Whether looks or race.

[ He looks weird, even for a human, he knows. ]

Even if that one turned against own kind for preservation of them... Pherhaps we were wrong...

I stopped trusting them a long time ago.

[ About four thousand years ago, to be precise. ]

[It's incredibly awkward to hear Duke worrying to himself. Zelda would like to try and ease that worry, but she knows she isn't exactly the best person for the job right now.

And so it's Sheik's voice that answers, with the settings of the SFC turned to anonymous. Duke's heard all of two sentences out of Sheik, chances are he won't recognize the voice.]

Who are "they"?

[ It helps that Duke isn't fully paying attention to the SFC. The thing receiving a polish holds most of his attention, or at least most of the attention that isn't occupied with confused worrying. ]

... Humans. [ It's... not hateful, but it is fairly clear that.. he's not particularly fond of them, just from that word. ]

[Humans... why is it that so many of the other races seem to dislike them? Sheik doesn't understand it. And...]

Not at all. But referring to humans as "they" makes it sound as if you are not.

[He mulls over it for a moment before continuing.]

Acting out of fear... it isn't just a human trait. Most living things have a need to survive, and that need can drive them to make rash decisions. It is a very powerful emotion.
