Initial rounds of data collection on the prototype Coral Metering Device are complete. The bad news is that, provided these readings are accurate—and they do correlate with the obvious visual data—the power level is extraordinarily low. I haven’t noticed any effects from this, but I wonder if it relates to the events of this weekend, somehow. Particularly since it appeared to be overcharged last week.

The goods news is that it’s steadily increasing. Slowly, but at least it’s in the right direction.

Interesting. We're probably not going to get another attack to compare this to any time soon, which is probably a good thing. But maybe a curse will have a similar effect.

That seems like a solid hypothesis. Unfortunately, it's not something we can test on our terms.

Well, it's like testing any natural phenomena. Can't make a volcano erupt on your own terms. But I've heard there are plenty of curses, so we shouldn't be waiting too long.

A friend of mine created a coral reading device. I have been monitoring it for quite some time. It seems that when the coral reaches full power, a curse occurs. After the curse, the power level drops again. This last time with the attack, the coral's power was over 100%. It's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Oh really? I was led to believe that no one was or had been monitoring it. That's interesting information. I'd like to collect my own of course, but assuming you're correct, one wonders what the purpose of the energy discharge--and possibly by extension, a curse--would be.

I've been, ah... unconscious for the past while, or I would have been sharing this information a little more openly. Long ago, people were told that the curses are "communication" from the coral.

Were they? Well considering recent happenings, you'll have to forgive me for being skeptical.

I agree. I fail to see any sort of communication in these curses. If I had to come up with a theory...

The coral is what regulates reality in this area. When it becomes overloaded, reality bends and we end up with "curses" or attacks from interdimensional creatures.

[Tech blinks, considering this.]

That's actually not a bad hypothesis. One thing I've been trying to work my head around is how this..."reality" seems to accommodate varying or even conflicting rules of nature and physics without any evident issues. But if you're right, then things might be less stable than they really seem.

Our position here in Vatheon is precarious, that much is certain. I'm glad to hear that someone else is monitoring the coral, though. We should compare figures to see if we're coming up with similar numbers.

There are notes for when there were curses or other such events - unfailingly, if the coral reaches 100%, there's an event and then the power drops again. The attack by Yami is the only time it goes over 100%.]

I apologize, I keep my notes in a fairly old-fashioned sort of way. We do not have much technology on my world. I can make a copy and give it to you if you like, or you can simply write them down on your own right now.

Well, that's the question. Unfortunately, this is too little to work with. I'll need to study the patterns over a longer period of time and cross-reference that with the state of the city.
