[Maybe the problem isn't that Ky has too much spare time, maybe he simply hasn't formulated the right things to do to fill his time. Clearly cooking is a skill that many people have that he lacks -- although he's not sure it's one that he can really obtain, since he recently tried and the fact that Sol lives above him makes him even more self-conscious than usual when Ky starts to be making his own smoke.

It has become clear to him that simply taking up more patrols with the Defense Force isn't ideal, and he can and has exercised but even that leaves him wanting something more.

And, well, why not? If he ends up not remembering or retaining anything from here then it's not really a loss, and if he does gain a skill then it can help him.]

What sort of things have people been able to learn that they consider useful? Not so much magic that can't be taught, but, for instance, how to stitch a wound, or fire a bow?

You don't have to be able to teach it...although I suppose it would help me if you could and were willing to.

In a manner of speaking. I doubt the type of interface I'm used to with exists here.

[Not Ky's fault that he was born towards the end of a hundred year war that was caused by technology.]

I suppose it's probably for the best. Besides. I find chess far more enjoyable.

I learned the basics of the rules, but I've never had a chance to play much.

I don't think there are many people here who are happy to have been taken from their duties and lives elsewhere.

That much is certainly true. I'm concerned about what might be happening at home without me.

[A pause, though, because he remembers falling apart in May-Yu's arms and how it hurt.]

Then again, perhaps they're just fine.

It's apparently quite possible that time on our world doesn't pass while we're here.

That this is like...a temporary being pulled away from our own worlds, and time here passes differently. Or something.

Hn. I'm uncertain whether that's a relief or a concern.

If it were true, I think I'd personally find it a relief. There's too much I need to do on my world, and not enough time as it is.

Perhaps. It's something of a concern, though, as my enemies at home lived in a state of accelerated time. It leads me to wonder if this place is related to them.
