[video] Tribute to Lamufao
[Someone is placing their SFC with great care, so that it catches a ring of people standing near the core cluster of the coral growth in the Plaza, and it's only when Death the Kid stoops to speak into it that he can be seen.]
We will begin shortly. Zelda, should anything happen, this transmission will report on our behalf.
[He almost adds something, but the grim reaper straightens up, turns precisely on a heel, and strides back to join the others -- Shirley Fennes and Shiro Fujimoto are clearly visible, and to the other side stands Marie Mjolnir. Kid addresses those gathered, but what he says isn't audible.
Apparently it means to begin, because Shirley begins employing Healing Artes with the sprawling growth of the coral as her target, while the others have their heads bowed in concentration.
One of the stripes in Kid's hair lifts off his head, gradually expanding to connect like a halo around his head. This is followed by the second. The third is the slowest to catch up, but by now the plaza has started to rumble, the image swapping now between being washed out with light and, more frequently, bursts of static.
The roar transmitted by the SFC could simply be a result of audio distortion, or the energy being poured into Lamufao by their combined efforts is so great the air itself screams.
Eventually, there is nothing but static at all to see. Those with the ability to sense spiritual energy at range may have felt a massive sphere of condensed energy gathering at the coral, and then abruptly winking out. When the image returns, the Plaza is still there, the barrier looks more reliable than it has in weeks, and nothing untoward appears to have happened to the coral.
Death the Kid, however, crumples like a puppet cut from its strings, the lines of his hair having returned to their usual, asymmetrical placement at the side of his head.]
[ooc; Marie and Stein's presence still needs to be confirmed by their players, but please feel free to respond to Shirley and Shiro! The barrier appears to have been restored, and the coral's energy readings will be disclosed by Zelda.]

[More importantly, he's looking at the screen with wide eyes, mouth ajar even before he speaks.]
Kid, what the hell did you just do? Did you just fix the coral? What even was that?
Or just catatonic in general.
Gosh, Karkat. Death the Kid would legitimately love to nerd out with you about Soul Theory and Energy Transference, but he's going to have to field that one to his Professor.]
[Yeah, that doesn't look good. Let's hope he's not dead. He's just asleep! Totally!!! It's what he's going to forcefully believe until told otherwise. Besides, there were other people on that video, so Karkat summons his best Angry Face and jabs a finger at the screen.]
Okay, fine, someone else. I am in deep need of explanation and I will march my way back to the elevator, ride down, and fine one of you to physically shake the info out of if that's what it takes to learn what's going on.
[VIDEO] threadjack
Hello, Karkat. It seems you are awake. We have been planning to recharge the coral for some time now. I have the particulars if you'd like, though I will be occupied with taking a look at Kid as soon as Rin brings him up here as I'm sure you can imagine.
I wasn't aware you knew I was asleep. I've been awake about a week and a half.
Give me the details, and take care of Kid as soon as you can.
[There's Kid now!]
Please wait a little while.
[She shuts off the feed to tend to Kid. When it comes back on about twenty minutes later she's in a different place, looking tired but somewhat relieved.]
Kid will be fine. Now then... I've been observing the coral for quite some time. Previously the only time the power level dipped this low we ended up having to fight that awful creature of darkness. Thalassino has kept it stable up until now, but it is clear that she has no intention of helping us further. Kid approached me a few weeks back about attempting to charge the coral, and we decided that it would be best to do so only after safely evacuating everyone to the island. Generally nothing we do has any effect on the coral, so I'm really quite surprised that it worked.
[Zelda, honey, it didn't work. It did the opposite.]
[VIDEO] sorry for my slowness
No, I don't mind. I'm not going to have a problem unless you outright usurped the whole moirail package out from under my hooves, which I sincerely doubt he would have allowed.
But I didn't know it was Thalassino keeping the coral stable. Then again, high priestess blah blah, I'm not surprised, even if I don't buy into the whole religion bullshit built up around it. And Kid being passed out a little while is better than having to coordinate another battle against some invading force, no matter how cool it was to become a god the last time it happened.
I'm going to stay up here a day or two more just to make sure the barrier is stable before I haul myself back down, but I don't expect any other option. He's the son of a death god with freaky soul powers; he has to be good for something.
Video/Action for those on the island
It's fully charged...
[What a relief.]
[ACTION]
So we can go back down now?
no subject
[Sure, it looks fine now... Zelda wants to see it hold for a little while before sending people back down there though.]
no subject
To think, they can't even keep their own world stable, and leave us to fix it! Really, how disappointing! Don't they know we have lives to live?!
video/action on the island
He had quieted down quite a bit by the time the feed starts, and he watches with breath held, chewing on a thumbnail, a pent up ball of anger, upset and nerves. This didn't feel right to him. He should be down there protecting the people that are leaving themselves open to any sort of disaster that might happen. That's what Knights were supposed to do, right? Protect the other exorcists that couldn't always protect themselves.
But there he was, sitting, waiting, the two things he hated doing so damn much and he had no other choice in the matter. He hated it, and yet there was nothing he could do about it.
So he watched.
When the static hit the SFC, his heart dropped and he practically stopped breathing all together, but that was nothing compared to his reaction when he saw Kid topple over. Most everyone around him seemed merely relieved that the coral was back to full power, but all Rin could focus on was the fact that Kid had just hit the ground like a sack of bricks and that is not supposed to happen.]
Kid?! KID! Is he okay?! Some one tell me he's okay! KID!
[Some one should probably answer, or at the very least stop him from running down there on the off chance that bad shit might still happen.]
Action
The coral seems to be fully charged. Rin, please go retrieve Kid and bring him and the others up here. We should observe the coral for awhile longer before returning to the city.
[The healers down in the city just gave their energy, so Zelda isn't sure they'll have enough to take care of Kid if something IS wrong.]
Action
He's at the coral within minutes, dropping to his knees next to Kid in order to check on him. Of course that raises the question, how do you tell if a death god is actually okay? There could be something going on that he would have no idea how to detect let alone fix. The only thing he can do is take Kid topside and hope for the best.
He carefully picks the reaper up and gets him situated in his arms, idly thinking that Kid really is as light as he looks, and it's a little scary that it doesn't even strain him to hold Kid like that.]
Zelda says everyone should get to the island.
[He's not going to wait around for answers, questions, arguments or any variation thereof, turning to jog back to the elevator.
Once alone inside the elevator as it heads up, he slumps his back against the wall and lets out a shaking sigh, head tilting down to touch his forehead to Kid's.]
Please be okay...
Action
For all of Kid's endless stare, he might well be watching him from the bottom of a very, very deep hole.
That's more or less how it feels, with the world he knows receding, one bright spot far away and getting further still, sinking gradually into a cold and guttering black.
His Father could have done it easily, without mistakes.
But he was too afraid to take on the mantle of Lord Death, too fretful that he might turn out just as mad and tyrannical as the son who came before him. So he shied way from becoming a fully realized grim reaper, and the strain of transferring their combined power, translating it into a wavelength the coral found palatable had proved too great.
At least he may have accomplished something worthwhile. But Maka, Rin--
Hadn't he promised he would make the Thompson sisters into the finest pair of Death Scythes Shibusen has ever seen?
He isn't ready for this, he wants to go back, needs to, but the dark is so very, very deep, and he hasn't the strength of soul to clamber back into the place he belongs.]
Action
A painful realization hit him just before the elevator stopped; this was what it was like from the other side of it. Whenever he ran off to play hero and came back beat to hell, put through the ringer, the people who cared about him were left to worry and fret, and deal with the aftermath regardless of how much he assured them that he was fine. Only Kid wasn't in any condition to do even that, leaving Rin with nothing but the sound of the elevator and his own heavy breathing drowning out Kid's shallow breaths.
The elevator dinged and the door opened, letting him stumble out. He adjusted Kid in his arms before starting back down to where everyone was gathered. He could only hope against hope that some one there could help Kid, because that one was one thing a demon wasn't any good for.]

As soon as the elevator hits the surface she's running toward it, and when she gets close enough she transforms mid-step into her weapon form, zapping herself immediately over to simply tuck herself in against Kid's chest.
brb soul searching
hah]no subject
Liz has moved, which means she'll move too, practically stumbling forward herself as she takes in the sight.]
...Idiot.
[It's all she's able to say, a mumble at best, before she rubs a sleeve against her eyes to quell the tears before they can even start.]

action;
Merines!
[It's an experience similar to that time with the Nerifes Cannon, and he's near frantic inside as he searches.]
action; I am fashionably late!
Then, she heard someone.]
Walter? What are you doing here? Are you okay?
[She said as she ran up to him! Thank goodness that nothing bad happened to him!]
action; whoa, then I'm slow as molasses
Nothing happened on the island. And you? Are you safe?
[It's an odd choice of word, but he just wants to know if she's fine.]
action; we'll be slow together!
[She said as she pointed to the coral behind her. Despite her words, it was quite clear that she was tired. It was the first time she had healed something this extensively for almost a year. She found herself lucky that she had enough energy to run to Walter with no trouble.]
The barrier is safe so I think everything should be back to normal.
[Or as much as it should be]
action; team turtle, commence!
You must rest.
action; With our powers combined....!
No, I'm okay, I...
[...Was she getting a bit lightheaded? She was sure the ground was flat a moment ago...]
...be fine.
action; that sounds far too much like friendship
action; meanwhile we'll be here with the awkward fish shipping
action; can two fish be any more awkward—

[Dirk watched the entire thing through, and he is... well. Angry, to say the least. And maybe insulted. To do something so risky, so obviously experimental, to revitalize the coral- he hasn't heard anything about it from the Defense Force's tech division, what the hell made them think it was a good idea to do without people who are scientists, as far as he can tell. Why didn't he know this was going to happen.
He doesn't think to blame the fact that he's been moping and ignoring his SFC for this past week. Of course that wouldn't have anything to do with it.]
Exactly how much goddamn thought did you all put into this?!
