12 ⊙ dream | Rising Sun, 1908

_{[If anyone were to wander into this particular dream, they would be greeted by what appears to be a desert town. While it may have been pristine and exotic in the past, now it resembled a battlefield. Many of the buildings that once stood proud in the city were now in varying degrees of ruin, and quite a few streets left much to be desired. Not only that, but there were the bodies. If they were to explore, they'd come across a number of them--maybe it was a small handful, maybe there were dozens but regardless of the number it's obvious that there's a higher goal in mind than quashing a rebellion.

Soon enough, a relatively clear street comes into view with a small group of Ishvalans below staring up at something--no, someone. Closer inspection reveals that it's not just anyone--most Amestrians wouldn't be running around with half of their uniform off, let alone standing where a sniper could easily pick him off. At first it seems like Kimblee will walk away--surely he would what with being outnumbered, right? ...No. He's moving. Is he going to surrender? ...Not likely.]}

A soldier--?

A transmutation circle... A State Alchemist?!"

_{[Bingo.

There's a glint of red in the sunlight as he places something between his teeth, then he's clapping his hands together to create a brilliant crackle of red light that trails down the side of the building and into the streets beneath their feet.

And then everything explodes with a deafening roar. Rubble flies and smoke billows out between the buildings and... Oh dear. All of that just with one shot.

It's silent for a few seconds, and then a maddening shriek comes from Kimblee as he dissolves into laughter, his arms outstretched before the ruined street.]}

Kimblee. Kimblee don't flop down on your back.

Kimblee. Get up.

Stop cackling like a madman where someone can easily see you. Stop it.

...Then Kimblee jerks out of his sleep far too soon for his liking.. He makes a small hum as he turns over to stare up at the ceiling with a bit of a disappointed look. It always ends just as things start to get good.]}

[Not that he knows Kimblee that well, but this is definitely a side he hasn't seen, and didn't expect. Although it does make some sense, his being friends with Vanitas and all, it makes him uneasy.]

And it could turn ugly fast depending on what Kimblee says. Because of that, he's taking a few seconds to act like he's waking up in order to get his mind back on track.]}

...No. While a few of my superiors may have gained some twisted enjoyment out of it, the only thing I enjoyed about any of that was doing my job and the sound of my work. I was fully aware of what a career in the military could entail the minute I put the uniform on.

So- it's just the exploding stuff part.

...More or less, yes. If I'm doing a job this vulgar I may as well try and make the best of a bad situation.

And handle it with some flare?

I used to be a human weapon, Roxas. While these circles can perform mundane transmutations, their true purpose lies in explosives. It's not as flashy as Mustang's alchemy, but I'm very happy with how far they've come since I was your age.

...Though I'm inclined to agree with you. It's stupid, but at the same time it was to protect the rest of the country. The way things were there were already massive casualties on both sides over a period of seven years. When others like myself were called in, things were wrapped up fairly quickly--I'd say within a matter of months?

[Roxas shakes his head.]

I mean the whole thing. Ordering somebody, anybody, to be killed. Seven years of that... [He has a hard time imagining seven years of anything.] They'll never be anything to anybody, except memories. And- maybe just memories like yours.

...it's a waste, isn't it? Is that how you protect anybody?

But they're still something. Even with the small handful that survived the campaign, they continue to live within the spirit of their people and, like you said, in the memories of others. I haven't forgotten a single person who died in that war and it's been nearly ten years since I was there.

A waste of abilities, life or both?

Both, I guess.

Living in somebody's memories- isn't really that much.

They say a man dies twice; once when he stops breathing, and again when he's forgotten.

It may not be much to some, but to others it can mean the entire world. ...Of course that doesn't mean I like it anymore than you do, it's just how life is.

Maybe I just don't get why it has to be.

Ignorance is bliss, isn't it? Though it's probably for the better. War can have some rather vulgar points.

...yeah, I guess so.

Sometimes I wish I could have that innocence back.

I do hope this hasn't altered your opinion of me in a drastic way, Roxas. I rather enjoy speaking to you, so I'd hate to have our relationship damaged because of my actions in the past.

Well- it's not like you've been going around blowing people up. And ten years is a long time.

If I was, I think the entire city would have known by now. ...But yes, it is. I've had plenty of time to think over some of my actions.

Of course, that doesn't meany you'd do things any different.

Because of having to kill people, because you don't understand the point of it, or both? I'm simply trying to understand, so you'll have to forgive me.

They- kind of go together. I don't think I could ever kill someone without a really personal reason. War's not personal.
