01 - And it shall come to pass that what men made shall be shattered

[ The SFC tumbles down to the floor to show Rand stumbling out of a small, hotel bathroom, blindly shoving the door out of his way and colliding with the opposite wall, near the edge of the starfish's range. He's got both hands to his head - stump and iridescent tattoos of dragons clearly visible on his wrists. ]

Not a box, it's not a box, I can clean my teeth in there, it doesn't take that much time. It is not a box... [ He's repeating this to himself for a bit, working himself back off the wall and back into the bathroo- ]

It's not - no, can't go back in there. [ And he's just going to sit on the floor heavily.

Guess even that size of a room is too small for him. ]

Rand? [Don't mind Mat poking his head around the corner, his eye concerned.]

Why don't you clean your teeth in the kitchen? It's bigger. [Not a box? That was because of...]

[ Because he thought he could do it in the bathroom. If he can't clean his teeth in the bathroom, in the larger of the open space, how could he use the smaller of the spaces in there. ]

Thought that the bathroom was plenty big enough. [ He could stretch his arms out in there, after all. He wasn't forced to hunch up or anything but... ]

Well it apparently isn't. [If Mat was Egwene or Nynaeve or any of the other women, he'd have his hands on his hips right now. Let's just say they all have bedrooms--]

Just be careful. Maybe stay away from any room smaller than your bedroom for now. Until we figure out what's too small for you. [Flaming Elaida]

[ Or Mat is sleeping on a couch, Rand in a chair, and Perrin the bed. and they rotate. ]

... I know I'm not shielded. It should be fine, I can stretch my arms out... [ Burn her. ]

[There are hotel rooms with multiple beds; they didn't have to stay in Perrin's. Anyway here he comes from the direction of the kitchen. Possibly from cleaning up the dishes they used for that rabbit stew Rand thought was so tasty.]

There's no need to push yourself, Rand.

[Or at least, maybe not starting with that bathroom.]

[Urgh rabbit stew. One of the nice things about being here was that they didn't need to eat rabbits all the time. Or boiled grain or whatever else they could get their hands on that wasn't rotting.]

You need more space than that, this proves it. And like Perrin said, you don't need to push yourself.

[ Hey, things were slowly not rotting recently. It just depended on where Rand was. ]

I didn't think that that was pushing myself. [ A little emphasis at the indication of the bathroom. ]

[He's sure Rand is frustrated, not being able to do something so simple as stand in a washroom.]

We'll work on it. Starting with something a little larger.

Definitely starting with something larger. [Mat's glad he isn't scared - no, terrified - of being in small places. And he can't help but feel terrible for thinking it.

Mat wanders into the bathroom, turning to see how large the room was.]

This looks about...1 span wide and 4 spans long. I might be a bit off.

.. So try with two by four? Or perhaps two by five. Or just... [ He doesn't know. Constantly brush his teeth in the kitchen. ]

Or we'll just have a very spacious washroom.

[If they're building their own house, it won't be much trouble to do.]

A very spacious washroom. I can't think of a reason why you'd need to go into any other room that's two by four or two by five.

[Very little trouble, yes.]

.... [ Just... have a smile you two.

Can Rand claim to have the best friends? ]

[It really isn't such a big deal. But it's good to see Rand smiling like that. It makes him seem more like the Two Rivers boy than the Dragon Reborn.]

I'm finished in the kitchen, if you want to use that for now.

[Light, it's good seeing him smile like that again. More like how he was before, what little Mat remembers of that time, before Mat got those holes in his memory.]

Won't be all that long until we'll be able to move and you'll actually be able to wash your teeth in the washroom.

.... Sounds good. [ Rand will just... Stand up, try to snag his toothbrush without fully getting into the washroom - or using saidin. ]

... I'll go do that.

[That.. doesn't look good. Uhoh.]

I think that answer always depends on who you ask. [ He just needs to sit here and hold his head for a bit, okay. ]

[He still sounds worried, though.]

[Yeah, he's... not really going to push it.]

[Normally Dhaos would leave this sort of event alone without comment; others were better equipped to help after all. It would have been the same this time too, but the man's behavior and repeated mention of a box...that gives him pause.]

...So you too suffer from the memory of being sealed in a box.

Sealed, Shielded from the Source... [ Mumbling between his arms. ]

Although, really, it was more of transported...

["Shielded from the Source"...? That sounds almost like...]

[Yep, that's bringing back some bad memories there.]

... Yes. I learned a way around it, while trapped, but.. they had more than thirteen there. They could have permanently... [ A shuddering breath. But they hadn't, and they technically couldn't - He is the Dragon Reborn, he has to be a man who can channel.

Then again, he has no idea what was going through her head when she ordered him shoved in the box anyway. ]

[It take Dhaos a moment to figure out where to begin. To be permanently cut off from his magic... He barely suppresses a shudder at the thought.]

I have had...a similar experience. They caught me by surprise after a battle, and sealed me in a sarcophagus. ...My own magic was used to feed the spell keeping me in.

[He shifts a bit, gaze far away.]

...I never thought I would find another who understood how it eats away at your mind.

At that point, many would argue that my mind was already being eaten away. [ Amused, despite himself. ]

But being shoved in a box barely big enough to fit me, taken out when they started at dawn and stopped at night to beat me.... that didn't help.

No more than simply being left in the sarcophagus for a decade helped me.
