Well, summoning requires training and certain inborn traits. So only certain people can actually do it, no matter how much theory is mastered. I'm pretty sure it has to do with how mana works, since not everybody can use magic in my world, either. In order to be able to summon a Spirit, pacts have to be made with them. These are agreements that the Summoner has to uphold, or else risk the pact breaking and losing the aid of that Spirit. At least in my case, since I was severing pacts with the previous Summoner to forge mine, I had to fight the Spirits with my friends.
Like I said when I posted this, we have eight elemental Summon Spirits: Efreet is the Summon Spirit of fire, Celsius is his opposite and the Spirit of Ice; Undine is water with Volt, who's lightning; Aska and Luna are light, while Shadow's darkness; Gnome is earth, and Sylph are wind.
[She shrugs.]
Light is represented by two Spirits and wind by three, all of them working together with their respective partners, so I guess that means I miscounted. There are technically eleven for the eight elements, but still only eight pacts. They're shared by the multiple Spirits.
[Sheena scratches her cheek, humming.]
Then we have Maxwell and Origin. Origin is the Summon Spirit of, well, everything. He's kind of the "king" of the Spirits. Maxwell is a little harder to define since he's so old, but... The ancient ruler of the elements is the best way I can think to put it. When I summon him, that's what I call on. Maxwell actually is responsible for an entire city floating in the sky--that's all his magic and the conditions of his previous pact.
The two Spirits I don't have pacts with are the Spirit of the World Tree who is consequentially our Summon Spirit of mana, and Verius, the Summon Spirit of heart. These two are a bit more complicated than the others, but that might just be because they both came to be during my lifetime while the others are thousands of years old. The Spirit of the World Tree, I'd really have to go on a history lesson to explain her, but she and the tree are both connected to my world's mana flow. Verius is interesting in that he's... Kind of a reincarnation of a man-made Summon Spirit, which is pretty unique. Because all our hearts were focused on him, and we felt so deeply, he was able to transform into a real Spirit, into Verius.
[Ah, there might be a little wavering, a little dimming--but it's brief, not even a few seconds.]

Verius isn't Corrine anymore, and instead someone entirely new. It's really pretty amazing.
[All with a smile, even though... even though she'll always miss Corrine.]
