[When the camera switches on, it shows not one, but two people - Serph and Ky. YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN THEM AROUND BEFORE. Serph’s the same as always, calm and expressionless as he speaks :| ]

This is Serph, leader of the Defense Force. Due to Vatheon’s nature--

[You know, putting people to sleep and returning people to their home worlds. Because the latter’s what happened to all the other leaders of the Defense Force.]

-- it’s unwise to have just one leader. From now on, Ky is also a leader of the Defense Force.

[Ky’s comfortable as a leader. He has, after all, spent most of his adult life and some of his childhood (depending on when various people’s definition of childhood starts) being one. He smiles, earnest and charismatic.]

I hope that I’ll be able to serve well in this capacity. If anyone has any concerns, or general suggestions for improvement, please come to myself or Serph. And if anyone would like to join and hasn’t yet, we’d be happy to have you join the team.

The Defense Force works to protect Vatheon from threats and serves the populace here. Everyone has the capacity to do something to help, if you want.

[Since Ky’s said everything that needs to be said, Serph nods and ends the feed.]

Yes. And if you'd prefer to talk to him instead of me, no offense would be taken. We both just want to do the best we can at our jobs, and make sure we help people.

[Well, Serph also wants to eat people.]

Oh, right. I thought you meant your patrol changed, too.

Ah, no. I'm just taking on additional, mostly administrative, duties.

[Lloyd wrinkles his nose.]

That sounds pretty boring. Good luck with that, I guess.

It's worthwhile work. I don't mind it at all.

Better you than me, then. I think that would drive me nuts.

I've done that sort of thing before. Both during the war and as a police officer.

[Lloyd makes a mental note that he never wants to be a police officer, not if it means having to do all that paperwork.

I'd rather just help people than write papers about other people doing helping people out. Good luck with that, I guess. At least you won't be graded on it, though, right?

With proper paperwork and accountability it's easier to tell where help is needed and can be properly preventative. For instance, it's easier to make sure we always an active patrol that can be called on.

And of course not. No one's ever graded me on anything.

...I don't get it. How do papers make it easier to make sure people are patrolling anywhere? Wouldn't it be easier just to call the people in charge of that part and ask?

How do they keep track, unless they write it down? And why would I want to have to call someone who might not be on duty that moment.

Particularly with the way people can disappear from Vatheon, it's better to have written records of what they're supposed to know.

[Of course, now it feels like something obvious, something he should have thought about. He rubs his neck, a little chagrined.]
