Just curious, but how many of you here have jobs? A lot of stuff is free, so nobody really has to do anything, but it seems like it'd get boring if there wasn't work to do every day.

[he may or may not be debating doing some real work, after two weeks of being lazy.]

[Shiro deals with all-powerful beings pretty often, so he knows all too well how often they do things 'for the lols'.]

That's probably why they have the curses too.

[ The look on his face. It's a cross between confusion and annoyance. ]

It wouldn't be the first time humanity has been made into someone's plaything.

Quite honestly, sir, m'not all too keen about being another pawn on the chessboard.

Doesn't seem to be just humanity included in this game though.

I noticed that there were some other species here.

[The trolls are kind of hard to miss.]

You'd be surprised. Not everyone here's human though they prolly look it.

I've already discovered trolls, reapers, and weapons. I wonder what else could be out there.

[Demons don't count, he knew about them before he came to Vatheon.]

Consider yourself with another reaper discovered then, sir! Buggered if I know what else comes in this place... seems it attracts all sorts.

What, you're a reaper too?

By the too, I'd wager you prolly met Kid then seeing as you live at the Villa...

[He nods at that.]

It's just you two so far, unless there's more hidden among the people I've met.

Well, there's a small handful of us. There's my boss and my senior... that's Misters Spears and Sutcliffe respectively. And there's also Asato and Mister Tatsumi..

[ A pause. ]

Used to be a lot more. M'not sure where the others went.

Actually I don't think I've met any of those people yet.

[Vatheon is huge and he hasn't had a chance to talk to everyone.]

If Mister Spears ever comes by the bar while you're around, I'll make it a point to introduce you!

[ There's another thoughtful pause though. ]

D'you mind if I ask... are you human?

As far as I know, yes. Why?

Well, I meant no offense and all, sir. S'just... well... you can never tell which is which in this city.

[ That and he was still trying to figure out which of the twins' parents was the demon. If it wasn't Shiro then... the mother? ]

[The problem there is in assuming that Shiro is their biological father.]

Heh, I suppose not. It doesn't really matter anyway, what a person does is more important that what's in their blood.

But to satisfy your curiosity, exorcists like me are born human, but gain the ability to see demons later in life. It doesn't make them not-human, but it changes them a bit.

[ All he knows is that the boys are half-demon... he's never heard about their parents, well, their biological father at least. Yukio never wants to tell him. It's a touchy subject.

But somehow, he can see why the boy seems to hero worship this man so. ]

That right? Back where I come from, demons let you see them only if they want to. The humans have it tough. The one I knew was here but a few months ago.

It's like that usually in my world too: demons are only visible to humans if they want to be. But if a human gets a mashou- a certain kind of wound inflicted by a demon- they can see demons any time, regardless of whether the demon wants to be seen or not.

Fortunately it's pretty rare outside of controlled circumstances, usually new students at the academy have to have one purposefully inflicted on them to continue their studies. But it does happen sometimes.

[ Have a low whistle for that. ]

So... if you get hurt by a demon, that's when you lot get to see them? Blimey, you exorcists have it hard.

[ brb feeling for Yuki just even more than he already does. ]

That only happens the first time, from then on you can see demons all the time. And like I said, it's usually really rare. Demons can only hurt humans if they possess something, and that's pretty hard for them to do.

We also have ways to make that power go away, but most people refuse it. I can't say I blame 'em either. As scary as demons are, it's even scarier to know they're there but not be able to see them.

[ Small shiver from that. ]

Can't blame them. I'd be bricking it if I knew there was something out there that was bally dangerous and I couldn't see them anymore...

It's the sensible choice. We're always short on exorcists anyway, I haven't seen a class larger than ten even when I was a student, so it's much better for people to face their fears and join the fight.

Have to say, that's quite admirable for a line of work where you're bound to come a cropper if you don't know what you're doing.

You lot are rather hardy for humans, eh?
