09: He wants to talk to people [video]

[At first, his voice sounds very tired, and he looks more drained than usual. Sleep has been playing hard to get for the last few days.]

It's almost April, isn't it? The kids would be starting school soon, back home.

[Even though he's saying that, whatever is weighing so heavily on his mind isn't directly related to school.

But a moment later, his tone lightens a bit, like he thought of something humorous.]

It's a little too quiet around here, with the kids on their camping trip. We should throw a party. Maybe a 'hooray we survived another curse' party.

[Oh thank goodness, he's not the only one. But he has to think about it for a moment before he can remember.]

I remember the conversation we had, a couple months back. The one where you approached me with questions about you and Rin. Do you remember that?

[There was an audible click as Yukio forced himself to stop his sentence, and instead he turned attention to his shirt.]

It is the only thing I can do. Think and ask myself questions that I can never answer. Why did you allow us to live? It must of been difficult for you... Because of us you always had to be careful... To never allow yourself to show a bit of anger or to slip...

[At that, Shiro just shrugs. He doesn't have the answers Yukio is looking for, simply because his answers aren't the ones that would satisfy Yukio's curiosity.]

It was tough, yes. But it was worth it. I couldn't ask for better kids.

You still haven't answered my other question, Dad. Why did you allow for us to live? If that question is too much then how about these questions. What other motives could there be to having us both alive? Why did you have Mephisto Pheles be our legal guardian after something happened to you?

Why should you two be judged for who your birth father happens to be?

[It's not a full answer, but it's part of the reason. He hates how much family matters within the Order.

As for the rest of Yukio's questions...]

Mephisto was only in the paperwork as a technicality. I hadn't expected to die so soon, I had thought I would at least live long enough to see you two become adults.

Besides that, Mephisto is my oldest friend. I know it seems strange to you, but he's someone I trust not to kill the two of you.

[Mephisto is a demon, so Shiro is very careful with what he trusts him to do. But making sure Rin and Yukio are alright is one of those things, since it happens to be in his best interests too.]

Rin's powers were going to awaken eventually, that was always a certainty. Sealing them was only a temporary measure. So tell me: how many people reacted well to his powers and heritage?

[It was never Yukio he was worried about. It was always Rin.]

Exactly. And if they're already prejudiced against you two for something that happened almost sixteen years ago, how well do you think they would take it if they found out about Rin's powers developing?

Mephisto was the best choice. There were others I counted as friends, but they were affected by the Blue Night or other things Satan had done. At least with Mephisto, he didn't automatically hate you two.

Besides that...he owes me a favor. I can count on him to keep you two alive, at the very least.
