I asked whoever was listening, which happened to be the world. The Throne of Heroes and the Holy Grail is all part of the grand scheme of things, as they say. I wished to undo my past and have someone else be put into my position so they could have succeeded where I failed.

The ritual is, in essence, to channel the energy of seven Heroic Spirits who are summoned. The ultimate goal is to use this energy to open a gateway to Akasha, or the origin. Reaching Akasha is supposedly the goal of all mages.
Realistically, though, the Heroic Spirits who are summoned are tricked. They answer the call of their eventual Master - the mage who forms a contract with them - because they have a reason for desiring the Holy Grail, for it to grant their desire.
