Voice

[No theatrics or flamboyant language today, just one tired vampire. He'd like to say he's only tired because he just woke up from one of those comas that aren't actually restful, but that's not the case.]

It's been about twelve days since Rinoa Heartilly left the city, I meant to say something but then, well, I wasn't available.

It's been nine days since Sola vanished as well. Considering the usual three-day rule, I suspect it isn't a temporary thing for either of them.

I still have access to Rinoa's apartment and much, if not all, of Sola's things are still here at the house. If either of them had something that belonged to someone else, let me know and I'll see if I can track it down.

[And with that exceedingly clinical and neutral announcement made, he just shuts off the recording.]

[Fai has been well aware of the absences but because of Johnny being asleep he has tried very hard to not think too much about them. He knew Johnny was going to be upset when he finally did awaken. Fai has been checking on the other every day, waiting for the day when his fellow vampire would finally awaken. Today when he went in to the room, Johnny was already gone. It isn't too long after that that he hears the broadcast.

There are only a few places that Fai knows Johnny would go. So he takes his chances and goes out on the hunt. It isn't long before he finds the other at their workplace. Sliding in quietly, Fai pauses by the door, unsure if his presence will really be welcome. He hasn't had to experience much loss on this world, but he knows it isn't easy and Johnny is a lot like him in many ways. Wanting to be alone is exactly how he would want to be...but he also knows how self destructive that can be.

He knows as well that his presence has probably already been discovered and so he moves softly across the bar.]

Johnny..[What can he really say?]

Damn.
Didn't see that one coming.

[It's a genuine disappointment for Dirk. He's gotten pretty fond of Sola by now.]

Maybe it's best for her, if she went home. She seemed pretty down lately.

[It's hard to tell without being able to connect the voice to a face, especially when the conversation happened a few weeks ago, but Pyunma is fairly certain he remembers who this is. The names he lists are unfamiliar, but loss he's familiar with. And this man has tried to help him before- he'll try to return the favor.

He spends a few minutes figuring out how to set his response to private, and double-checking that. And when he does respond, he does his best to echo their previous conversation.]

Sometimes it's difficult to get close to strangers. But it can help, if you're willing.

What three-day rule? Nine days is barely more than a week.

I'm- sorry.

[They seemed so happy together. Well, Sola seemed really happy about it anyway.]

He could still come back.

[Even with the bottle of vodka lodged in his head, Johnny could sense someone coming and was able to smell who it was as soon as Fai stepped inside. He couldn't really decide if he wanted the company or not, but he wasn't about to kick the other vampire out.

Either way, he knew he didn't want pity, it wouldn't get him anywhere and he was too angry at himself to accept it.]

I don't think I realized how easy it is to get comfortable here, how easy it is to take things for granted.

Neither did I, it was a well orchestrated plot twist.

[Because nothing can convince him this wasn't the Head Nurse's doing in response to him mouthing off to her.]

Perhaps you're right. She was homesick and still had things to do. She's probably happier for it.

[That didn't mean he wasn't going to miss her like crazy, though.]

[Johnny was lucky he was the type who was good with voices, names, and faces alike because, if not, he might not have placed it. When he does, he smiles a bit, even if it can't be seen. The attempt to help was appreciated.]

Yes, I suppose it can. It has before. It's just hard when you keep losing them once they quit being strangers.

The three days that seems to apply when people vanish from this place temporarily.

Granted, there have been some that have vanished for longer, but rarely longer than a week.

As am I.

I wish I could hold hope in that, however...

[He hesitates, but then decides it doesn't really matter if he's being listened in on or not.]

However, I believe this was different than what normally happens.

Different? What do you mean?

I never gave him permission to leave, so he'll have to come back.

I'll miss her, too.

But, I'm going to imagine that she's happy being back home with her friends.

[Fai walks over and settles into the seat beside Johnny. He has always held onto the fear that one day he would wake up and his brother would be gone. It's something that has made him try to keep an arms length distance from everyone while there. But he can often find himself getting too close, forgetting that they could disappear at any time. And when he gets reminded of that, like at times like these, it makes him want to withdraw once again even if he knows he shouldn't. He won't pity Johnny, he will simply share the other's misery.]

This world can lull us into feeling secure even when we know we shouldn't.

Recently, I found myself in the company of the Head Nurse, to put it plainly: I was not the most kind nor courteous. Seeing as she has the power to send people away and considering her less than pleasant nature, it would not surprise me if this were a statement of some sort.

I wish a simple prohibition was all that was necessary to keep someone here.

Believe what you wish, but I won't be holding my breath.

Yes...I'm sure she wouldn't want us moping around due to her absence when it was likely what she wanted.

She would want us to be happy as well.

...that still doesn't make it permanent. They seem kind of- fickle.

I've heard of crazier things here, haven't you?

And perhaps...I suppose that's proof enough in the number of times some people return to this place-with or without their memories. They also seem very petty and I wouldn't put it past them to hold on to something like a personal slight.

Nor would I put it past them to return Sola not as he was.
