No, the moon is always there.

[His voice starts to pick up a bit, more involved. Almost passionate, even, but not exactly quite there. Maybe more focused if anything.]

It's simply shifting, changing the amount of light it takes and reflects from the sun. When the World blocks that light from reaching it, you see nothing but darkness, a new moon hidden in all that black. It can't produce it's own light, not often, it is nothing more than a dark mirror that glows when it can be in the unhindered presence of something so much more brighter than itself.

But even when it can't reach that light, even when it's way is blocked, it never stops being. It doesn't need our petty acknowledgment; it's higher than that. It stays cloaked in the darkness of space, watching us all quietly while we fool ourselves to think we're all alone. It waits patiently until it can reach the light again, taking bit by bit until we once again see it in all its glory.

It is a sign of humanity's great arrogance and ignorance that they presume it to have left them at all, as if they can truly know the matters of light and darkness, as if it was ever theirs to really understand.

[He's really into this. In case you couldn't tell.]
