Video: First Lesson ((action posts welcome, especially from animals!))

[The little gnome appears to be somewhere on the island above Vatheon (the nice forest up there, not the bad one!), having finally built most of the tools he'll need to make his home here. It looks like he's created a gnome workshop of some sort if all the old-fashioned machines (mostly operated by crank) behind him are any indication. He addresses the feed, looking quite serious.]

I don't suppose anyone knows where to find a small wrench?

What size, specifically?

[It's another troll! David's never going to get over how nice they all are...]

Hmm. One that's suitable for use by a creature about the size of a field mouse. Do they make any that size here? I've had to make all my other tools so far.

That's awfully small.

[Equius considers for a moment.]

I could probably make you one.

Are you sure? I don't really have anything to give you in return. Not here in Vatheon, at least.

[He would offer his services to help take care of the chocobos if he knew that was a thing, though! David is the best vet.]

[Fortunately, the chocobos are healthy. Also, Equius isn't entirely sure Darkleer wouldn't try to eat David.]

You don't need to pay me back. It would be a challenge making a tool that small; that's good enough for me.

...and what do you know about using wrenches?

[Because clearly this means you are a Lombax and are wanting to fight something.

I could craft one, under certain circumstances.

[What is a Lombax? He's never seen one! Have a big gnome smile, Alister.]

Well, I'm not all that good at using one, but I need to tighten up a few things here. It's difficult for me to make metal tools my size without a forge, and I never really did learn to forge metal.

[Clay, yes. Some woodworking, yes. Metal? No, he was too busy with doctoring!]

Just a tool, then? Ah... my apologies. I had assumed something else.

Exactly how small are you, if you don't mind my asking? There may be a little extra work involved.

[The gnome looks thoughtful.]

Well, I'm not quite sure what unit of measurement you use, but I'm about the size of a field mouse.

[And the General is surprised by that, knowing the gnome was small to begin with, but...

Good lord, how would he even carve a micro-cubic omniwrench? Yes, an omniwrench. Because he's not stopping at a regular wrench.]

...this is quite a creative task you seem to be offering. A wrench, smaller than a field mouse?

[He laughs, a hearty, good-natured sort of laugh even when talking about his size.]

It is a little difficult, isn't it? Usually I would get one from another gnome that's familiar with metalworking, but I can't really do that here. You don't have to trouble yourself over it if it's too much. My name is David, by the way.

[His own companion's a bit on the short side, David. Not as short as you, but still pretty small! So he's not at all bothered by him or the request.]

No, no, it's understandable. A typical wrench would take no time at all, but what you're asking... Orvus, I'd need nanotechnology just to get a basic shell. When would you need it completed by?

...David. [A simple name for a simple creature. He chuckles.] General Alister Azimuth, of the Lombax Praetorian Guard.

[His smile fades slightly at the title. General. Why do so many other sentient societies see the need to fight?]

A basic wrench is fine, Mr. Azimuth. I even have the plans for most gnomish tools if you would be able to make them.

[What a strange world, where he's more willing to trust a troll than a furbeast. Of course, the troll wasn't a general...]

[Alister understands the need to distrust him - after what happened with Jade, he wasn't sure he fully trusted himself anymore.

But the Lombax sits, tall and dignified, keeping to the topic and pushing thoughts of war and distrust to the back of his mind.]

I never said I refused the task, you know. I would fully encourage anything to occupy my time, if you so need them.

[There's a little consideration, then David smiles again. Hate is a cycle that has to be broken with trust, and he'll always be one of the first to extend his hand.]

That would really be a big help! Let me figure out how to get these plans onto this communicator...

[Okay, so trust doesn't go far enough to let Alister see the secret book of the gnomes.]

[He's relieved for the change in demeanor - though he would never wish to come to the gnome in person if a simple title caused that much unease - switching to brass tacks and already starting to prepare his own tools.

When it came to crafting? Lombaxes were always ready.]

Moving the camera over them as-is works just as well. If I need a reference, I can simply play this back and pause.

[That and he's got a projector. But how he'll hook the SFC up to it, he's still not sure of.]

Though you shouldn't underestimate my memory, friend.

[He nods and sets the SFC up so that the camera function is pointing down into the dirt, picking up a stick and drawing the shape of the wrench he needs as well as the measurements for it. It's really quite simple! Thankfully Vatheon's translation system will automatically translate David's writing.]

That's the sort of wrench I need right now. If you're just looking for things to do, though....

[He starts to draw out a plan for a plumbing system as well as the tools needed to make one. The cords, pipes, and drill bit would seem complicated to someone unfamiliar with technology, but they're probably nothing to someone from a space-age society. It's really quite beautiful in its simplicity, able to sustain itself without producing any waste.]

A hot bath up here would be nice!

[Aww, look, it is his lil' buddy.]

Equius might know where to get one all like that.

[Why does that sound familiar - ah! That's the name that had popped up on his communicator just a bit ago!]

Yes, I think he contacted me! It's awfully nice of you both to offer the help. How have you been, Gamzee?

You can all be saying a lot of Equius, but bro does know his fuckin' tools.

[He relaxes a little, chill to chat.]

Done been good. All my peeps up and be quitting catching those zzz's so much. You?

[Kanaya was wandering the island again, happy for some clear weather. She was busy again, making notes in her SFC as she tried to catalogue the various tropical plants that grow up here. She noted some extra video chatter on the network, but mostly ignored it, turning down the volume. She became interested in it again, however, when she realized there was an echo. Someone nearby was broadcasting with a Starfish Communicator. Kanaya followed the sounds nearly to their source, but decided that it would be best if she announced herself. After all, there were plenty here who do not react well to surprises.]

Hello? Is someone here?

Oh!

[The voice is surprisingly deep for such a tiny creature. David's the size of a mouse, if even. It's a female troll... and she's glowing!]

Hello up there, miss.

[She certainly is glowing, brightly enough that it's pretty visible even in the sunlight. She looks down at the tiny person talking to her, and keels to get closer. It just seems more polite to try and deal with people at their own level, and she couldn't expect him to get up to hers. Then again, with some of the strange things people in Vatheon can do...]
