[And so he is, standing on the beach in a shirt and pants, his armour and cape set aside for the moment, waiting with arms folded for his descendant]

[Fuck. He's going to look like such a fool, such a goddamn fucking FOOL. He knew this was coming, knew this was going to be a thing sooner or later--he just wished later was still the option here. So after getting himself together, washing up a bit despite the fact he's going swimming, and putting on a new pair of clothes, he definitely makes his way to the beach.]

[He feel naked to be honest, with that stripe stripped from him, he just feels so weird and--ugly? Maybe not the word for it, but it's close enough. He just doesn't look right.]

Alright, I'm here...

[Dualscar bestows upon him a faint smile and a nod of approval. Eridan, don't you see that he's only hard on you because he doesn't want to coddle you? He really does want the best for you.

The older sea dweller's eyes look Eridan over minutely]

Are you feelin wwell? After all a that sleep, you'vve fed yourself and you're ready to go?

Other than a bit groggy, I'm fine. And yeah, I fed myself, I know how to take care a myself an' all, so don't worry.

[Though, as much as he's trying to seem like Mr. I-so-totally-got-this, he looks somewhat nervous.]

Good. This session ought a be an easy one. Let's get in the wwater, and I'll showw you some positions and strategies for groups a underlings takin' out underwwater foes.

[He nods towards the water] For all wwe knoww, I'll be needin' you to command a phalanx against some kind a monster, if one attacks the bubble.

[Eridan looks to the water with a wry expression, but otherwise composes himself with faux-confidence.]

Well, let's get to it, I mean standin' here with our fins up our nooks ain't gonna teach me anything!

[That sure is Eridan marching on over to the water, his chest slightly puffed out like he's some big deal--before he stops, looking at the water with that same expression before looking at Dualscar and like a light switch, his expression showing nothing but determination, maybe a bit of impatience. LOOK HOW EAGER HE IS TO LEARN, DUALSCAR.]

[Dualscar follows, but doesn't enter the water yet. He remembers well how Eridan flailed when he was dumped into the ocean at the party, and while some of it could be attributed to drunkenness, he's not sure.]

Wwhat are you wwaitin' for?

[He strides into the surf and dives when the water gets deep enough, but immediately surfaces. Just his eyes are above the water, watching his descendent.]

[He's so nervous, so utterly nervous. Here he is, going swimming with his ancestor. Here he is, going to embarrass himself in front of him. Last time, he could have played it off like 'Oh I was drunk, totally not cuz I don't swim like EWER!' but now he isn't ewen the slightest BIT drunk and he really has no excuses. The thought of blaming his coma comes across his mind, but he knows Dualscar isn't stupid, knows he wouldn't take such a half baked excuse. Augh his chest hurts from this fretting and his fists have balled up tight, without him really even realizing it. Fuck, fuck, fuck his life fuck this situation, fuck him for avoiding water with such a shitty excuse!]

[He swallows hard when Dualscar speaks up, his eyes darting to him as his brow furrows.]

Who the fuck said I was waitin'?

[Who cares if he totally was! He's just going to... March his way into the ocean once Dualscar's in, yep just going in it, no problem, see he's got this way more than Dualscar probably ~~correctly~~ thinks. Once it gets to his waist, he's just going to dive forward, THAT much he can do. But it's then that he starts to panic, because there's no way he can hide this. How can he even honestly explain himself? He's trying his hardest to act like he knows what he's doing and while he might be able to mock correct strokes when it comes to swimming, there's an obvious lack of finesse and skill to it. He surfaces, barely, but he's trying to not look at Dualscar, knowing the disappointment is going to come. Goddamn everything.]

[Dualscar was pretty sure that Eridan isn't practiced at swimming, and the first few strokes confirm it. There's no disappointment, only a sigh and a bit of confusion.

He swims towards the boy. At least Eridan can't drown, so he's not too worried, but he's ready to catch him if something should go wrong, and he should start to panic.]

You don't swwim often, do you?

[His tone is more curious than anything else]

Wwhy not? Is there something wwrong?

[Well, this is surprising, if not a huge relief. He doesn't look at Dualscar though, too embarrassed and ashamed to even afford it.]

I don't, no. I spent most of my time on land--keepin' a eye on the land dwellers, mind you. It was a full time job, so I didn't get much free time to go swimmin' an' the like...

[Maybe that's part of the truth.]

I see. Wwell, wwhatevver the reason, it's not right for a sea dwweller to be a fuckin' useless swwimmer, especially livvin' in a bubble under the sea. You understand wwhat I mean?

[Yeah there's no real excuse here.]

[He eyes Eridan for a moment]

[He says that all too quickly, but he tries to cover it up.]

It isn't that--not exactly, alright?

[Eridan is just very... Materialistic and vain, Dualscar. Do you know how long he spends getting all spruced up in the morning? Dunking himself in water is quite counterproductive!]

Wwhat is it, then? [Dualscar scoots closer, and reaches out. He knows that touch isn't something he himself is used to, but Eridan has a matesprit, and so maybe he's less twitchy than Dualscar was at that age. So he grips Eridan's shoulder] You havve to be honest wwith me, Eridan.

[Eridan does flinch when Dualscar reaches out, and he probably wouldn't have even done that if not for the last time Dualscar's hand came towards him it met with his cheek and left him sprawled on the floor. But he lets Dualscar grip him and he doesn't pull away.]

It's really fuckin' petty, alright? Not ewen worth mentionin'. I'm fine to go underwater. It's just a slight, stupid discomfort is all.

Tell me wwhat it is.

[Dualscar has no intention of striking Eridan again, unless he deserves it. Which may not be much comfort.

He wants Eridan to be strong, to be a leader, but he's learning from Signless, too. He draws in a breath through his lungs, and gets honest.]

I knoww you don't fuckin' trust me. But knoww, also, that I wwant wwhat's best for you. I don't knoww wwhat it means to be someone's ancestor, but I figure wwe're sea dwwellers. You an I ought a wwork it out for ourselvves. It doesn't mean wwe havve to be wwhat the others are. Wwe'll showw them somethin' to envvy, if I havve anythin' to say about it. [He basically blurts that out, his face slightly growing purple at it, his brows furrowing a bit as he continues to keep his eyes from him.]

But--that does sound good. I would like for us to work this out, like you said we ought to, I wouldn't ewen be agreein' to meet ya if I didn't. In fact, Fef doesn't ewen want me to meet up with ya, so if anythin' the fact I'm here should speak wolumes as to how much I agree with you about all a this.

[Maybe if they stay on this topic, he can just get Dualscar to forget about his pettiness over being in water.]

[He smiles faintly at that, and gives a squeeze to Eridan's shoulder before releasing him, but when Eridan mentions Feferi, the smile disappears]

The Heiress an I havven't gotten off on the right foot, but I'm hopin' to repair that, somehoww. Puttin' that aside, I'm glad you an I are on the same page.

Noww, tell me about wwater. You're a sea dwweller. Wwhy is it like this?
