It was originally used to describe a group that would cut off and preserve the shrunken heads of their enemies as trophies.
Someone in the movie industry applied the term to phycologists, presumably as a metaphor for their work, since there is no actual cutting off of heads in psychology.
Obviously, the term has a negative connotation.
