[Text] - A Day of Little Importance - 013

Lunaday, Ifrit-Decan 41, ND 2018

[The date is circled in Guy's personal journal. But he hasn't bothered to tell anyone. With the curse going on and a murderer on the loose in the city, it doesn't really seem like a decent topic to bring up. Besides, he's never been one to draw attention to himself, especially at times where attention was needed somewhere else.

It's still bringing up an interesting topic to his head, though. Hmm.

Sticking to text this time around for as little confusion as possible - he doesn't need people thinking they're speaking with Zelda, after all.]

I understand different cultures have different ideas of when someone is considered an adult, right?

So hey... on your home worlds, what would people do for someone who had come of age? Celebrations, ceremonies... or maybe it's not exactly a right of passage as far as you're concerned?

I'm curious.

[And he'll just leave it at that. He's technically been an adult on Auldrant for long enough - exactly a year ago, to the day.

But he already learned a while ago to treat his birthday as just another day. Celebrate that he's stayed alive one more year, and that's it.

So that is exactly what he's going to do.]

For me it wasn't a specific date that I could point to. It was a process, and proving it just meant that people started to trust my authority.

There are some people who will never seem to accept it, though.

[The woes of the fact that he's been trying to convince people that he's an adult for the better part of ten years now.]

So... it's more of a point of personal maturity than actual age, then?

Or is that not quite it?

More a matter of the responsibility you rise to meet.

Actual age is irrelevant.

And does it matter how well you meet that responsibility in the end? Or just that an attempt is made?

It does matter that you not fail people, for the same reason it always does.

That has nothing to do with age.

Of course not. Some people might consider the individual effort given a mark of mature character, though, regardless of the outcome.

You said you had to prove it. Do you think you managed that successfully?

...Perhaps. Failure wasn't an acceptable result, for me.

I think for everyone but Sol, probably.
trepidity: (Hmm?)

By others' understanding, or because that's the standard you set for yourself at the time?

And I assume this Sol has some high expectations, then.

If I'd failed...humanity wouldn't have survived. If I'd simply persevered, but not succeeded, then the war we were in would have continued, still indefinitely.

He's...I suppose in some ways, yes.
trepidity: (We'll figure this out.)

That much was resting on one person's shoulders, huh. Was it your choice? To take up that kind of responsibility?

Yes. Absolutely.

[He'd spent five years from the age of ten until the age of fifteen training for it. He could have backed out any time there, but he didn't, because he felt a sense of duty and he wanted to help.]
