[Text] - A Day of Little Importance - 013

Lunaday, Ifrit-Decan 41, ND 2018

[The date is circled in Guy's personal journal. But he hasn't bothered to tell anyone. With the curse going on and a murderer on the loose in the city, it doesn't really seem like a decent topic to bring up. Besides, he's never been one to draw attention to himself, especially at times where attention was needed somewhere else.

It's still bringing up an interesting topic to his head, though. Hmm.

Sticking to text this time around for as little confusion as possible - he doesn't need people thinking they're speaking with Zelda, after all.]

I understand different cultures have different ideas of when someone is considered an adult, right?

So hey... on your home worlds, what would people do for someone who had come of age? Celebrations, ceremonies... or maybe it's not exactly a right of passage as far as you're concerned?

I'm curious.

[And he'll just leave it at that. He's technically been an adult on Auldrant for long enough - exactly a year ago, to the day.

But he already learned a while ago to treat his birthday as just another day. Celebrate that he's stayed alive one more year, and that's it.

So that is exactly what he's going to do.]

There isn't really a specific time or a coming of age ceremony for people in my world. There's becoming a three star Meister or becoming a death scythe for Weapons, but we already live on our own and make our own income so...

I don't think there's ever a line between growing up and adulthood.

[Huh. It's kind of weird when she thinks about it.]

So everyone just works on the same level, then? Or is there a mark of maturity? Maybe after a certain amount of experience, instead of an age, or something like that.

...Nope. I doubt that, too. My dad is 35 and he still acts like a baby.

I think in my culture, you're not bound by expectations of attitude, just how well you adhere to the laws.

Heh. I think that's a given anywhere you go. So sorry for him.

So are those laws easy or difficult to understand and follow in the first place?

Do whatever Lord Death tells you, don't eat good souls, don't kill people unless ordered to, don't fall in with Witches or insanity.

It's pretty straightforward to me!

[Wait. What?]

...

People eat souls?

[How is that even possible. 8|]

[...Whoops.]

Oh...not everyone, just Weapons. Or people trying to become Kishin

[That totally explains everything.]

That's why it's a crime to eat souls. If you're eating a good soul, it means you've been lost to insanity and you'll have to be executed. The corrupted soul of a person trying to become a Kishin is, in turn, devoured by the Weapon that defeated it to become stronger.
trepidity: (Hmm?)

So Weapons basically clear out souls in punishment for that particular crime, then?

And I assume there's a reason people try to become Kishin in the first place. Barring the insanity part, of course.
[He isn't going to pretend to know what a Kishin is, so...]

...Insanity has a certain draw to people. It's horrible but fascinating at the same time.

Most people consider it freedom from fear--fear of death, fear of law, fear of god, fear of aging and being powerless.

But to become insane is to turn your back on your humanity, on god. You can't erase fear, it doesn't work like that.
