[Maybe the problem isn't that Ky has too much spare time, maybe he simply hasn't formulated the right things to do to fill his time. Clearly cooking is a skill that many people have that he lacks -- although he's not sure it's one that he can really obtain, since he recently tried and the fact that Sol lives above him makes him even more self-conscious than usual when Ky starts to be making his own smoke.
It has become clear to him that simply taking up more patrols with the Defense Force isn't ideal, and he can and has exercised but even that leaves him wanting something more.
And, well, why not? If he ends up not remembering or retaining anything from here then it's not really a loss, and if he does gain a skill then it can help him.]
What sort of things have people been able to learn that they consider useful? Not so much magic that can't be taught, but, for instance, how to stitch a wound, or fire a bow?
You don't have to be able to teach it...although I suppose it would help me if you could and were willing to.

[It's the truth and not the standard turn-of-phrase.]
Between you, Link, and Zelda I'm fairly certain that joining the Defense Force is the right choice. I look forward to working with you.
[Formalities completed, Malik move back to the original topic.]
Why the urge to learn something new?
Video
Since it seems I can't really expect to be going back to my world in any sort of reasonable timeframe.
Video
Do you have any hobbies?
Video
Video
[He shows no amusement on his face, but the answer surprises him. He would be lying if he didn't think it was a little amusing. Fortunately what Malik finds amusing he also finds interesting.]
How is it not the same? I would think with the Nostalgia Nook that it would be an excellent opportunity.
Video
Perhaps it would be easier here if the goal were to simply have teacups, but the story behind them is fairly important as well. I used to travel a lot, after the war, for work, and I would pick up one or two from places I would go. When they're all just there it feels more...mindlessly material.
Video
Huh. That's a really good hobby.
[He clears his throat and speaks more directly.]
Buying them would defeat the purpose then.
Have you ever thought about fishing? Or maybe taking up writing?
Video
[ While Ky has a certain kind of patience, it might not be the kind that works with fishing. ]
Nor have I written -- beyond paperwork, of course. I read enough to know... that I couldn't quite do it justice.
[ It's one of the few areas where Ky feels self-conscious of his battlefield education, can sense the incompleteness of it. ]
Video
He becomes contemplative and closes his eyes; imagining himself on the side of a lake.]
Fishing can be very relaxing. How can I describe it?
It's just you, the plants, trees, animals, and water around you. You hear the water lapping at the rocks. The wind is lightly blowing through the trees. Everything is at peace.
If you're doing it properly, you're enjoying a nice cold beverage at the same time. Having a friend come along to talk to, joke around with, or simply spend time together is also a nice touch.
Suddenly - you feel a pull on your line and the world jumps back into action. The adrenaline starts flowing as you wonder what might be on the other end. The contest begins to see who will win this struggle for life. Will you emerge with your prize or will your prey escape from your grasp?
It takes only a minute or less for the outcome to be determined. If the fish wins, you can't help but feel some sense of admiration for it, mixed with the slight disappointment of losing it. If you win, you have the chance to view its magnificence, its shiny scaled skin and its streamlined and muscled body. You have control over its fate and it stares back at you, helpless.
Most of the time, I simply place that magnificent animal back into the water; free to go on living and possibly allowing us the chance to meet again and test our skills against each other in the future.
Other times you can't help but think of its deliciousness. There's nothing quite like a crispy-skinned, melt-in-your-mouth, butter dripping, hot and tender freshly caught fish roasted by campfire near the water's edge.
[Malik starts to look a little hungry and a quiet growling noise can be heard.]
Re: Video
You make it sound very appealing. But in my experience, I'm not...very good at doing nothing. Even on the war front between battles, I could find something to do. Perhaps, then, it wouldn't be something for me. I don't know.
Video
I suppose fishing isn't for everyone.
I suggest writing all the more strongly then. You can do it almost anywhere, it's a particularly good activity when things are quiet and there isn't anything else to do, and there are no boundaries on what you could write. Poems, stories, jokes, even plays about food ingredients.
[Malik has an enthusiastic face.]
Video
[And he doesn't have to share it with anyone.]
But it doesn't seem like it will help anyone else.
[Or really be productive at all.]
Video
Everyone loves a good story.
Haven't you ever come away from reading something feeling good or inspired?
Video
I'm certain that I can't write so well as that.
Video
Which is why you should practice. You'll never know until you try.
[Malik rubs his goatee, a small amount of frustration settling in from this stubborn knight. It's not the first knight that he's met with this kind of attitude and in some ways he respects the dedication and seriousness on display.]
What about gardening?
Video
Ask him about his lightning magic.]Gardening?
I suppose that that could be done on the island up above?
Video
Going up to the island does have the advantages of fresh sea air and sun.
[And for casting lighting without electrocuting things!]
Video
Can the plants grow down here, without the sunlight?
Video
It seems they can. I suppose wherever or whatever this light down here is, it's enough to grow plants.
There are trees around right? There's also the park. A couple of gardens shouldn't be too hard.
Video
[ Kind of musing now. ]
But it's not enough like sunlight to harm a vampire. Hmm.
Video
[Malik had seen people dressed up as them, most notably Zelos, but he hadn't thought they really existed.]
Video
He's a good person, though.
Video
[Ky has made a good impression on Malik, there's no reason he wouldn't believe him. Besides, Malik's getting used to all sorts of 'monsters' turning up that aren't trying to kill everyone.]
So what do you think? Are you going to be taking up gardening?
Video
Although I admit I'm not sure where to get...plants to plant from. Or seeds, if seeds are better?
Video
I could probably get you some if you'd like. Or, if you prefer, I'm sure there would be all kinds or varieties available in the Nostalgia Nook.
