[♥] dream.
(( OOC: video version here ♥ ))
November 5th, 2009.
It's an ordinary scene, even though the room probably won't look familiar. Pink sheets on the bed, with matching pink pillows all thrown about the floor. A pink lamp, sitting lonely in the corner. It is a room that belongs to one Yukari Takeba, who now sits on the aforementioned bed with her laptop resting on her lap where it belongs. She looks contemplative, staring at the CD in her right hand, but it isn't long before slips it in.
Suddenly, the viewpoint shifts to what can only be described as a first-person view. The room is shown exactly as Yukari sees it; no more, no less, with primary focus being on the laptop's screen.
Her thoughts can even be heard as well, echoing like narration.
I told Fuuka I'd take a look at it. Things are only gonna get crazier, with Mitsuru-senpai being so busy, so I should just do it now . . .
Something about the tone in her thoughts suggests uncertainty. But nevertheless, the video plays, and it takes less than a second for her to recognize it.
She gasps. Her father -- her father is on the screen. It's this video again . . . and without waiting for her to recover from her reaction, it continues to play.
Eiichiro Takeba goes on to describe how the Shadows are all trying to eat one another, with continued stress on not pursuing them -- and Yukari quickly realizes this is the version of the video Ikutsuki never wanted them to see. The original video. Tears begin to form in her eyes, out of anger, out of longing.
At the mention of her name, her eyes widen, hanging on his every word.
"Dad?"
At this point, she can't help herself: her voice is unsteady as she calls out to him, as if he were really there. The tears start to fall, and She brings up a hand to wipe them away so she can see the screen better.
" . . . Dad? Daddy!!"
. . . But it's too late. The sound of an explosion, glass breaking, and the screen dissolving into static are all that's left. Her heart sinks and she is left sobbing -- comforted only by the fact that she was right to trust and believe in her dad . . .
[Yukari awakens gradually. Despite her dream, it isn't unpleasant, so she doesn't even feel the need to open her eyes. In fact, she'd rather not, knowing that the dream was just broadcast to absolutely everybody. Her eyes are probably still wet too -- maybe even a little red. So instead, she reaches over to her SFC to switch off the video feed; violently, much in the way one would hit snooze on an alarm clock.
Now that it's over with, she wants to just curl up and get some sleep that is actually restful. But instead, she finds herself lying awake.

I pray that this recording reaches safe hands...
She gasps. Her father -- her father is on the screen. It's this video again . . . and without waiting for her to recover from her reaction, it continues to play.
My employer has become obsessed with a loathsome idea. This experiment should have never even been conceived... That's why I had to interrupt it. However, in doing so, I set free a number of Shadows that are certain to torment future generations. But if I hadn't, the entire world may have paid the price... Please, listen carefully... I cannot stress this enough... You must not hunt the Shadows that have dispersed!
Eiichiro Takeba goes on to describe how the Shadows are all trying to eat one another, with continued stress on not pursuing them -- and Yukari quickly realizes this is the version of the video Ikutsuki never wanted them to see. There's not much hope for me now. I have just one favor to ask... Whoever finds this... Please... Give my daughter Yukari this message. I know I promised I'd be home soon... and I'm sorry to break that promise... But, I want you to know... Daddy was the happiest man on earth when he was with you. ...I love you, Yukari.
Please take care of yourself...
"Dad?"

Thinking . . .]

After all, if he's going to put in the effort to come see her anyway, she isn't going to stop him.]
. . . Yeah. Okay.
[. . . Except that means she has to put in the effort of getting dressed and making herself presentable too. Faaantastic.]
action
Either way, Serph takes his usually leisurely pace as he walks to the dorms.]
action
She stretches, taking in the night air as she steps out, and is already there waiting when Serph walks up.]
no subject
How do you feel?
no subject
Dryly:]
Like I just crawled out of bed.
[Spoilers: it's because she did. But she supposes that's not exactly what Serph meant.]
no subject
Let's go.
[He expects her to follow, but he'll also let the silence stretch between them until either Yukari or himself decides to break it.]
no subject
After a while, she yawns, combination of dark and quiet getting to her -- and since the silence is broken anyway . . .]
So how about you? [How does Serph feel? How much of that did he see, anyway?] You . . . didn't have to come.
no subject
It's fine.
[There's a pause, before...]
I don't know what it's like to have a father.
no subject
She's honestly not sure what to make of that comment. Her initial thought is that maybe Serph lost his father at a young age . . . even younger than her. It gets darker as they approach the forest too, so it's probably a little easier for her to hide her reactions and nuances to all this -- but then she remembers how different the Embryon are.
Her curiosity brims, even though this walk was originally about her and her needs. There . . . has to be more to it, maybe something to do with their hunger for human flesh. And maybe this could be her chance to find out.]
I . . . guess that means you don't know what it's like to lose one, either.
no subject
Serph shakes his head.]
I don't.
[However...]
I know what it's like to lose comrades.
no subject
Me, too.
[Leaves crunch beneath her feet when she walks, but she stops a bit unexpectedly. She turns to Serph, finding that his expression is not exactly one of sorrow or grief. It's hard to tell -- maybe he's numb, too.]
. . . Sorry.
[For his losses. For making this about her again too -- maybe. But mainly his losses.]
no subject
It's not your fault.
[But whose is it really? He glances sideways to look at Yukari as he speaks.]
We can draw strength from those who have passed.
no subject
She's been trying to make it more of a habit in general.]
I know. And I have. [It's how she strengthened her resolve to fight so hard.] But that doesn't make it fair.
no subject
Would you mind telling me about your father?
no subject
Some things she just has to learn to let go.]
What did you wanna know?
no subject
What was he like?
no subject
Even after all these years, Yukari hasn't really forgotten. The way her face lights up a little is indicative of that, and even though her dream had shown him at his rope's end, she had plenty of pleasant memories with him as well.]
He was kind.
[A pause -- she can do better.]
He was busy, y'know, so he was never around much. But when he was, he would always make the most of it. He'd never stop reminding me about how much he wished he could stay home, whenever he had to leave.
. . . I guess it's like he said.
['Daddy was the happiest man on earth when he was with you.']
no subject
He sounds like a good man.
[And uhhh what's the word he used again? Serph gives Yukari a tiny smile.]
With a good daughter.
no subject
[She stares at him, not really sure what else she should say to that. If she really was a good daughter, maybe he'd still be alive. But she swore to put all that self-blaming, self-pity crap behind her long ago.]
Heh. Where are we going, anyway?
no subject
The forest. It's a good place to walk and clear the mind.
no subject
It doesn't have anything to do with their destination, but she actually looks a bit relieved.]
Is that why you guys chose it?
no subject
Cielo and I were wary of being so close to others' territories then.
[His gaze goes to the few straggling buildings left as they draw closer to the forest.]
And the other buildings seemed... flimsy.
[BUT THEN HEAT WENT AND PUNCHED A HOLE THROUGH THEIR WALL SO IN THE END IT DIDN'T MATTER.]
no subject
But really, who is she to judge?
. . .]
Gotcha.
[She actually hadn't noticed the state of the buildings much -- except for maybe the really old ones. But he's probably right.]
Well, territory isn't too much of an issue, at least. People do like their privacy, but . . .
It's nice that you guys opened up more to visitors.
no subject
Serph nods. The way people handle territory in Vatheon is vastly different compared to the Junkyard. He and Cielo really had nothing to worry about.]
Territory is handled differently here.
[It's handled far more pleasantly, for one. They pass by the base's garden on the way, the orange rose bush standing out amongst the smaller flowers.]
There are some I especially would like to show that.
[No more allying for the purpose of later betrayals, no more senseless sacrifices.]
no subject
Curiosity rises up within her.]
Like who?
. . . Heat?
[His abrasive, overprotective attitude comes to mind, but . . .]
