[ There's nothing but a blur of blue at first, a muffled groan somewhere. ]

[ A pause, a gasp, and then the sound of running feet. ]

[ THUD. A second later, the SFC that's on has tumbled out of the pocket it was in and lands on the ground, showing the current scene a little sideways.

Roxy's laying on top of Dirk, her arms wrapped awkwardly around him, and she has her face buried in his chest. They're wearing some interesting outfits (nice pants, Dirk), but that seems to be the last thing on their minds. ]

You're okay! I thought you weren't because fuck the Batterwitch but you are you're okay and I'm okay and nothing is going on and look! We're back and-- you know what I probably shouldn't be laying on top of you should I. Lemme just...

[ She caaaaaaaaaaassually slides off of him and picks up her SFC, shutting it again and turning it back off. ]

You know how your whole team and universe is the product of a scratch? So is ours, from what I've learned. Apparently there was another team of twelve trolls who played Sgrub, but fucked up so bad that they couldn't win even with three sweeps' worth of time at their disposal. They scratched, Beforus became Alternia - which is the stupidest set of names to ever disgrace my ears, Jegus - and Meenah, the Peixes on their team, blew them all up so they would continue to exist in the dream bubbles instead of being wiped out entirely, even if it meant being dead. Cue our universe, and role reversal. Kankri, Meenah, and everyone else became our ancestors. My team, who were formerly their ancestors, became the team to play Sgrub. Meaning that Kankri is the Signless pre-scratch, just like Jade's grandpa is the Jake dipshit's pre-scratch self.

This relation of selves, however, apparently does not mean they're anything alike. Have you ever met the Signless? He's not that bad, did great things, and was tortured and culled for trying to upset the way our society worked. Kankri is more long-winded and I am and I am all but positive that he's biologically incapable of shutting his insatiable word hole for even a single breath to break up the deluge. He talks about social bullcrap and triggers and privilege and how this or that is "problematic", and I could not be assed to listen in depth or else my think pan would have irrevocably liquefied and melted out my ears.

What my mistake was is that, before I even knew the true horrors I would face in meeting that colossal tool, I hoped it would be some time before I ever had to meet the pre-scratch team. They showed up only a couple months later. I had been warned, first by Terezi, then by Dave, but neither of them could have prepared me for it. And I actually tried to talk to the guy. My lesson is learned, and may whatever forces in my life that give a shit forbid my future self from ever becoming so stupid as to unlearn it.

Well, shit. Though the differences between pre-scratch and post-scratch would be obvious to think about- a different universe and different circumstances create different people. I'm not Dave's Bro, for all that I look like him and have some traits in common.

See, you would think that would be enough warning. That and Terezi specifically telling me Kankri was one of the worst and Dave more specifically describing what was awful about him. It still wasn't.

You lucked out, or Dave did, one of the two. Screw you both for that, by the way. What happened that I got preemptively punished from the past by being related to him?

Your ancestor's here, isn't he? I've run into him a few times. At least you don't have two shitty versions of the same person. Who knows, maybe the prescratch one can learn to be more like him.

He is, but I'm not going to get my hopes up after it backfired before. You don't stand in front of an oncoming tsunami and hope you won't drown; you run because the nature of the wave is to flood everything in its path. Kankri is the sea and his words are that flood. You might not believe me, but if you ever have the grave misfortune of speaking to that douche, you will.
