No matter where you go, it's always the same; people think they're invulnerable. They believe that no matter what happens, they'll stay in their safe little shell. They judge and threaten people from the shadows and don't fear retribution. It's because deep down, they wait for the strike, expecting it, and...

There's a moment where they let their guard down. That's when the pieces will move in for the checkmate.

The question is, how do you know if you're the one who's going to get closed in on? Or are you the one moving the pieces?

Only time will tell, won't it?

It's no problem. The ability to either win or lose are both mine to resolve.

[Is this Izaya? Honestly.]

There's no way of knowing for certain if you're going to win or lose. You have to stay on guard even if things seem to be going well.

[Hideyoshi quirks a doubtful eyebrow at the screen, grinning just a little.]

Well, that's not cryptic and vaguely creepy at all.

It is impossible to reach checkmate by hiding away. You must play aggressively, keep your focus, and not regret past moves, even if they may have been incorrect. You must instead think of a way to make them work. If you doubt yourself, you will lose.

There is no question as to whether or not I am moving the pieces; I am. But there are two players in chess. Forgetting that will lead to defeat, as well.

Who's to say you can't be both?

[there's a pause between texts, and then-]

No one is invulnerable, and they can't hide forever. Simply waiting for a blow that will come is no way to live. After all, there is always more than one person in the "game" and more than one who's guiding the "pieces" across the board. Even then, there's always the possibility of a "wild card" who's nearly impossible to predict.

Also, aren't you staying in the shadows just by making this an anonymous message?
