Justice | [Video&Text]

Hello, Vatheon.

[Ky's carefully formal, seated at his desk with the SFC set up to create a very formal atmosphere.]

I'm Ky Kiske, and I don't represent any formal group. Nonetheless, I was hoping that you might take the time to answer a few questions. We all live in this place together, and I think there are some steps that can be taken to make this more of a community and a community where we can feel safer.

You can answer either verbally or with a written response of your own, but either way I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your answers with you, to determine what nuance there is.

[He pauses, then sends out the questions by text.]

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?

2. What is your society's stance on murder?

3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?

[He inserts a brief explanation of a jury here.]

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?

[He switches back to video.]

Thank you for your time.

I will give you some context to my world before answering.

My world is called the Junkyard, a land of constant war and endless rain. Everyone lives in Tribes -- large groups of people occupying territory -- and are united under a leader such as myself. Our knowledge is only that of war; schools, hobbies, justice... these don't exist in the Junkyard. [A brief pause, before he amends that statement.] Many things don't exist in the Junkyard. There are no plants nor animals; humans are the only living creatures in the Junkyard.

We were to follow the law of the Karma Temple. That law stated one could only reach Nirvana, a land of peace, when all Tribes have been conquered by a single Tribe. A Tribe is conquered when the leader is slain. The conquered Tribe members were absorbed by the conquering Tribe. It was law to follow their new leader. At least, that was how it was before we gained emotions.

[ text ]

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
We were once incapable of going against the Karma Temple's law. However, there was no punishment once people began to go against the law. 'Crime' does not exist in the Junkyard the way it does in other worlds, from my understanding of what I've been told the concept.

2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Killing was actively encouraged. We kill to stay alive. We kill to reach Nirvana. That was the law.

3. What keeps you from murdering people?
I prefer peace to warfare.

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Only when the Temple did not allow us to enter the Nirvana promised to us.

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
They do not exist in my world.

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
I respectfully decline.

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
It's best not to hold presumptions.

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
Murder and assault, probably. Theft is very much frowned upon as well.

2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Not acceptable.

3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
A sense of responsibility to the community? It's just wrong? I don't know. I've never thought about doing so.

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
No.

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
I don't have any.

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
...sure, I suppose.

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I don't presume anything.

[...why is he being asked all this? If he had things to do in Vatheon he wouldn't bother...]

The ruler determines the law.

It is somewhat military.

In that case, the accused is made to fight to the death with their accuser. The winner is in the right. It doesn't usually make it to court, people are expected to fight it out on their own. *unless a low-class Saiyan accuses a high-class Saiyan, then OBVIOUSLY the low-class Saiyan is in the wrong! Vegeta doesn't say, though.*

Ah, hold in, I'll send some answers...

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
It varies slightly from place to place, but murder and assault, generally.

2. What is your society's stance on murder?
It's not acceptable.

3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Me personally? I'm not really sure, I've never thought about murdering someone. I don't think it's my place to take someone's life.

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Yes

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Judges are somewhat easily corrupted.

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
Yes!

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I try not to assume, but I suppose if there wasn't any choice but to guess, I'd want to believe someone was innocent.

[Back to his video!]

How is that?

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
I don't know. Trying to destroy the world? Murdering the Beastlords?

2. What is your society's stance on murder?
If it's human, nobody pays much attention to that. In most places anyway.

3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Nothing at all. If I ever want to kill someone, I'll just do it.

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Yes.

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Like anyone would judge me. If I was ever caught they would kill me right away.

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
Why would I?

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I guess I wouldn't presume anything.

[He's been pondering this for a while because... something about it just bugs him.]

I don't know if- everyone agrees on what murder is.

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?

Murder, I suppose. Or rebellion.

2. What is your society's stance on murder?

Depends, but usually disapproval.

3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)

Depends. My team, though do not go out on killing rampage without reason. No money, no kill.

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?

Da, I have.

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?

None.

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?

I would.

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?

Need more information then that.

Lessee...

1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
High Treason in the form of kidnapping the princess and using her power to unleash a weapon capable of destroying the planet. It... Uh, never got to trial, though.

2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Murder is punished, plain and simple. The Royal Guard is pretty good at investigating that sort of thing... At least in theory.

3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Why bother? Seriously, there's no point in killing someone unless they've gone very far past deserving it.

4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Technically. Mostly because of either misunderstandings or the "law" being corrupt in that area at that time. Things have improved, thankfully.

5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Minimal. Yuri was the one who always wound up in jail.

6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
... I'm pretty sure the Guard and courts wouldn't ask the royal researchers - we have enough to deal with. But... Probably?

7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
Presuming is how you screw up. Seriously. I don't presume either way.

Mine?

[He blinks.]

Well- ...

Well, I guess killing someone, if they didn't strike first or you had the chance to let them live. And- it shouldn't matter what kind of existence it is. If they.. recognize themselves as a person, then it's murder.

That's a complicated question. I didn't see the situation to the end before... arriving here, I'm afraid. Our world was beholden to prophecy and defying it was against the law. But... the Score was one of destruction. It was only one path, and I don't believe it was the right path anymore.

Birth and strength combined determine who rules. Strength is the law, that doesn't change regardless of ruler.

I don't care as long as the rules aren't ridiculous. If someone deserves it, I will make them pay.
