Justice | [Video&Text]
Hello, Vatheon.
[Ky's carefully formal, seated at his desk with the SFC set up to create a very formal atmosphere.]
I'm Ky Kiske, and I don't represent any formal group. Nonetheless, I was hoping that you might take the time to answer a few questions. We all live in this place together, and I think there are some steps that can be taken to make this more of a community and a community where we can feel safer.
You can answer either verbally or with a written response of your own, but either way I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your answers with you, to determine what nuance there is.
[He pauses, then sends out the questions by text.]
1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
[He inserts a brief explanation of a jury here.]
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
[He switches back to video.]
Thank you for your time.

If I can ask a few follow ups:
Who determines the laws where you come from?
Is your society military in structure?
When you say you don't presume guilt or innocence...if there isn't sufficient evidence to either prove or disprove that they did it do you find them guilty?

Probably murder. At least when there is no respawn present.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Disapproval.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
My team.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Depends.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
None.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
Perhaps.
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
No default opinion.

If I can ask a few follow ups:
When you say it depends...What does it depend on?
How do you determine who is on your team? And when you say they keep you from murder do you mean they restrain you in some manner or that it's concern for them?
When you say you don't presume guilt or innocence...if there isn't sufficient evidence to either prove or disprove that they did it do you find them guilty?

My world is called the Junkyard, a land of constant war and endless rain. Everyone lives in Tribes -- large groups of people occupying territory -- and are united under a leader such as myself. Our knowledge is only that of war; schools, hobbies, justice... these don't exist in the Junkyard. [A brief pause, before he amends that statement.] Many things don't exist in the Junkyard. There are no plants nor animals; humans are the only living creatures in the Junkyard.
We were to follow the law of the Karma Temple. That law stated one could only reach Nirvana, a land of peace, when all Tribes have been conquered by a single Tribe. A Tribe is conquered when the leader is slain. The conquered Tribe members were absorbed by the conquering Tribe. It was law to follow their new leader. At least, that was how it was before we gained emotions.
[ text ]
1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
We were once incapable of going against the Karma Temple's law. However, there was no punishment once people began to go against the law. 'Crime' does not exist in the Junkyard the way it does in other worlds, from my understanding of what I've been told the concept.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Killing was actively encouraged. We kill to stay alive. We kill to reach Nirvana. That was the law.
3. What keeps you from murdering people?
I prefer peace to warfare.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Only when the Temple did not allow us to enter the Nirvana promised to us.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
They do not exist in my world.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
I respectfully decline.
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
It's best not to hold presumptions.

How were the law of the Karma Temple established?
And what do you mean about...not having emotions?

Murder and assault, probably. Theft is very much frowned upon as well.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Not acceptable.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
A sense of responsibility to the community? It's just wrong? I don't know. I've never thought about doing so.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
No.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
I don't have any.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
...sure, I suppose.
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I don't presume anything.

Do you have any particular perception of justice as a concept that you'd like to additionally note?
And do you think that society has an obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves?

Ah, hold in, I'll send some answers...
1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
It varies slightly from place to place, but murder and assault, generally.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
It's not acceptable.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Me personally? I'm not really sure, I've never thought about murdering someone. I don't think it's my place to take someone's life.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Yes
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Judges are somewhat easily corrupted.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
Yes!
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I try not to assume, but I suppose if there wasn't any choice but to guess, I'd want to believe someone was innocent.
[Back to his video!]
How is that?

In the case where you found yourself on the wrong side of the law, did you believe it to be a situation where the judge was corrupt? Or do you think that you should have been accountable as you were?

Murder, I suppose.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
It is not acceptable.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
In my opinion nobody deserves to die.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Unfortunately yes.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
None.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
I'm afraid I would have to decline.
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I'm not sure, but I would probably want to believe they are innocent.

Can I ask you why you don't feel capable of serving on a jury? If you don't mind answering.

I don't know. Trying to destroy the world? Murdering the Beastlords?
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
If it's human, nobody pays much attention to that. In most places anyway.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Nothing at all. If I ever want to kill someone, I'll just do it.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Yes.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Like anyone would judge me. If I was ever caught they would kill me right away.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
Why would I?
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
I guess I wouldn't presume anything.

Have you...ever wanted to murder someone?
And what is your opinion of justice? Do you believe it serves a purpose?
When you say you don't presume guilt or innocence...if there isn't sufficient evidence to either prove or disprove that they did it do you find them guilty?

Murder, I suppose. Or rebellion.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Depends, but usually disapproval.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Depends. My team, though do not go out on killing rampage without reason. No money, no kill.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Da, I have.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
None.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
I would.
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
Need more information then that.
No problem

Looots of headcanon.
1. What is the most severe crime where you come from?
High Treason in the form of kidnapping the princess and using her power to unleash a weapon capable of destroying the planet. It... Uh, never got to trial, though.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
Murder is punished, plain and simple. The Royal Guard is pretty good at investigating that sort of thing... At least in theory.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
Why bother? Seriously, there's no point in killing someone unless they've gone very far past deserving it.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
Technically. Mostly because of either misunderstandings or the "law" being corrupt in that area at that time. Things have improved, thankfully.
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Minimal. Yuri was the one who always wound up in jail.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
... I'm pretty sure the Guard and courts wouldn't ask the royal researchers - we have enough to deal with. But... Probably?
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
Presuming is how you screw up. Seriously. I don't presume either way.
no subject
If you lack the evidence to convict but context suggests guilt...would you find someone innocent or guilty? I'm sorry to press on this issue, but it is one that arises.
And as for the jury...I meant in the context of your time here in Vatheon. Does that change your answer?

Murder of any people.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
While it is unacceptable, it depends on what the reason behind it is.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
If they are not a threat to me or anyone I know.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
No, I have not. [But this took her a while to answer]
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
I have never been to courts
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
No, I would not.
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
Guilt.

Murder and assault.
2. What is your society's stance on murder?
It is not tolerated.
3. What keeps you from murdering people? (Is it concern for the consequences or concern on a moral level?)
I have never really considered this question. It's difficult to say, but I suppose it would be moral concern.
4. Have you ever found yourself on the "wrong side of the law"?
No
5. What is your experience with courts or judges?
Mostly positive, though I fear that juries are too easily swayed emotionally.
6. Would you volunteer for jury duty if it was asked of you?
Yes
7. Do you presume innocence or guilt in a case where someone has been accused of a crime?
If there is a sufficient lack of evidence, the accused is imprisoned while more evidence is uncovered - just in case. If nothing is uncovered, we pray to Din for guidance.
Looking over your follow up questions to other people... *Zelda is efficient, watch her save time!* My native country is both a theocracy and a monarchy. The original royal family was chosen by the goddesses, and we have kept the bloodline intact ever since the formation of the country. We are responsible for judging crimes that reach the high court.

However, ever since the Atma appeared in the Junkyard, things have changed. The Karma Temple's laws were no longer unquestionable, and some were rendered obsolete by the people of the Junkyard.
