Day 160 - [Video]

[Roxas appears on the screen, looking unsure of himself for a moment before taking a breath.]

Um... I wanted to apologize to a couple people for last week. I said some stupid things and- it was probably really frustrating.

I've been thinking about having some things of my own, and... I think the last day of summer would be good for a birthday. It still seems weird to just pick, but- I guess I've gotta turn 16 sometime.

[He pauses, looking like he has something else he wants to say, but his cheeks pink a bit and he just turns off the feed.]

Well... not really. I guess the Kokiri didn't think it was that important. [Read: only Saria did, and celebrations with just two kids tend to be a little lonely.]

How come you chose yours?

Huh... [Well, to be fair Roxas never thought about it before he came here.]

I- don't really remember when I was born, but- I think it would've been around now. I like summertime anyway.

Oh - then you're like me. [...Sort of. His expression softens a little.] Did you lose your parents too...?

[This is the first time anyone's asked him about parents, and his surprise shows. ...if he were to answer honestly, he doesn't have any. But if he's going to lie, like how he's started saying Sora is his brother, then...]

I, um... I never knew them.

[Well, that's another thing they have in common - Link says the same about Sola. In his case, at least, he does see Sola as a brother...]

Oh... me too. I was only a baby when they died. People ask me if I miss them, but... [How do you miss what you've never known?]

[Even if Sora is completely okay with it, it's still a lie.

...and Sora's parents aren't dead, but, uh. Trying to talk about them too much could lead to tricky questions.]

I guess you can't miss people you practically never met.

Uh huh - besides, Saria and the Great Deku Tree became my family! And now Sola, too.

[Yeah. Definitely Sola's original.]

You think of him like family?

Uh huh - he's my brother. [He pauses curiously.] Do you know him?

[...Roxas likes the way he says that. Like they really are brothers.]

Sort of. We've talked a couple times. He seems really nice.

[In Link's mind, they are. Sure, they might not have been born to the same mother (or born at all, in Sola's case), but that whole concept of biological family is sort of abstract for Link anyway.]

He is pretty nice. [He grins fondly.] I'm glad I got to know him properly. Do you have any brothers or sisters?

Y-yeah, I do. His name's Sora.

[...which sounds a lot like "Sola," actually.]

[Noted - Link makes a thoughtful sound.] Their names sound really similar, huh? Would he know when your birthday is? Or... is it more like me and Sola?

[Take that however you wish, Roxas.]

[Shoot. That is a good point, Link. And if they really were twins then why would his birthday need to be different from Sora's? He's not ready to admit the lie to someone he just met, though.]

W-well, I guess he does, but- it's always been his birthday, not mine. I kind of... want my own.
