Well, this certainly wasn't how I was expecting to spend my day...

[Shiro's face is a bit obscured at the moment, as his SFC is sat down next to a rice cooker (how did he get a hold of that? The world may never know) as his fingers work over a puzzle.]

ah, no... not quite... but as far as first curses go, this isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be!

... no, that was close...

[He keeps working at it, but not a second later, it finally clicks and the cooker opens up - empty currently, but at least now he can start to make his rice.]

Wonderful! This is kind of fun! How is everyone else fairing with their puzzles? I'd be more than happy to assist, if some one would be willing to pass some dinner my way in payment!

[He bends down, giving the SFC a completely innocent, 'you know you want to feed me and have me help' smile before shutting his SFC off.]

[She doesn't think too much of that. She's proud of her heritage. Though it takes a moment longer than it should, she answers:]

I spent most of my life in Germany, and transferred to Japan a few months before I wound up here. I speak Japanese too, of course, and also English.

[Just don't make her try to read kanji. She's awful with those.]

Oops, looks like some one else speaks German. And that just sort of slipped out.]

I mean... that's wonderful. You're lucky to have that kind of experience.

[Asuka blinks, eyebrows raising.]

You speak German too?

[Then with some effort, she manages to ask in the language itself:]

Have you lived in Germany before?

[Oh hell, he didn't mean to do that. So much for keeping a low profile.

He clears his throat nervously, and answers in kind:]

It feels like a life time ago, but yes.

[Pls to be ignoring that he looks like a teenager, saying things like that.]

[Hey, she only looks 14 at the oldest, herself. And what's wrong with a little hyperbole for emphasis?]

So why'd you move?

Shiro lets out a faint sigh, looking down with an expression of genuine sadness. For once, he's not trying to play coy or dodge the issue.]

My sister died, and it was too painful to stay where we had grown up.

[Asuka's curiosity dies down at that, and she looks down similarly. She may never have had a sibling, but she's lost family. For all her rudeness, she isn't heartless, either.]

I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been hard.

It was. But running away from my problems didn't really work out very well either...

[He lets out a sigh, but a forced smile follows it.]

I suppose I'm hopeless after all. She was always telling me to be more responsible.

[So much for that moment. Asuka frowns deeper at what he says, and her gaze turns stern.]

Of course running away wouldn't help! God, you sound like Shinji when you put it like that. If you call yourself hopeless, of course you're going to be hopeless. Can't you put some effort towards living up to her expectations? She wouldn't be very happy if that's how you've turned out.

[To that, Shiro just smiles sadly.]

You remind me of her a bit...

[And the smile fades away as he shakes his head.]

You're absolutely right. I intend to fix things, if-- ... when I return. I refuse to run away anymore.

I don't really care if I remind you or not; I just don't have patience for people who give up and run away like that.

And words are one thing, but when you go back, you'll have to follow through on that. It won't mean anything at all if you just say you'll do it and never do.

Maa maa... calm down, Asuka-chan~

[Sorry, Asuka,]

I will, I will! That's a promise! Once I'm back I'm going to make sure everything is made right again.

You don't have to do it for my sake. It's her expectations you'd be failing if you didn't.

Yes, I know. And it wouldn't be just for her either. For everyone I've affected.

[Her eyebrows raise.]

Then at least you understand that kind of attitude affects more than one person. Hopefully you'll keep that kind of diligence.

I'm certainly going to try.

Good luck with it, for what it's worth. Just don't rely too heavily on that, either.
