Well, this certainly wasn't how I was expecting to spend my day...

[Shiro's face is a bit obscured at the moment, as his SFC is sat down next to a rice cooker (how did he get a hold of that? The world may never know) as his fingers work over a puzzle.]

ah, no... not quite... but as far as first curses go, this isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be!

... no, that was close...

[He keeps working at it, but not a second later, it finally clicks and the cooker opens up - empty currently, but at least now he can start to make his rice.]

Wonderful! This is kind of fun! How is everyone else fairing with their puzzles? I'd be more than happy to assist, if some one would be willing to pass some dinner my way in payment!

[He bends down, giving the SFC a completely innocent, 'you know you want to feed me and have me help' smile before shutting his SFC off.]

Why would I want to go to a restaurant alone? How else am I supposed to make friends, if not by being friendly?

[She narrows her eyes.]

Because you're hungry? It's not the end of the world if you go to a restaurant alone.

[She's done it herself, recently, namely because 1) she can't cook, 2) microwaveable stuff and takeout get old.]

And if you really just want to make friends, couldn't you have picked a better way to do it? This still reads more like an attempt to wheedle food out of people than something selfless.

Perhaps it's both. Who are you to judge the duality of my intentions? Or to judge my intentions at all? It's not as if I'm stealing it, or gaining it by any other unscrupulous means.

You made a public post to the network. If you didn't want anyone judging your intentions, you shouldn't have made it in the first place.

But I didn't make it with the express purpose of being judged, therefore you're merely forcing your opinion on my situation because you don't agree with my actions.

[She doesn't think too much of that. She's proud of her heritage. Though it takes a moment longer than it should, she answers:]

I spent most of my life in Germany, and transferred to Japan a few months before I wound up here. I speak Japanese too, of course, and also English.

[Just don't make her try to read kanji. She's awful with those.]

[Hey, she only looks 14 at the oldest, herself. And what's wrong with a little hyperbole for emphasis?]

Shiro lets out a faint sigh, looking down with an expression of genuine sadness. For once, he's not trying to play coy or dodge the issue.]

My sister died, and it was too painful to stay where we had grown up.

[Asuka's curiosity dies down at that, and she looks down similarly. She may never have had a sibling, but she's lost family. For all her rudeness, she isn't heartless, either.]

I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been hard.

It was. But running away from my problems didn't really work out very well either...

[He lets out a sigh, but a forced smile follows it.]

I suppose I'm hopeless after all. She was always telling me to be more responsible.

[So much for that moment. Asuka frowns deeper at what he says, and her gaze turns stern.]

Of course running away wouldn't help! God, you sound like Shinji when you put it like that. If you call yourself hopeless, of course you're going to be hopeless. Can't you put some effort towards living up to her expectations? She wouldn't be very happy if that's how you've turned out.

[To that, Shiro just smiles sadly.]

[And the smile fades away as he shakes his head.]

You're absolutely right. I intend to fix things, if-- ... when I return. I refuse to run away anymore.

I don't really care if I remind you or not; I just don't have patience for people who give up and run away like that.

And words are one thing, but when you go back, you'll have to follow through on that. It won't mean anything at all if you just say you'll do it and never do.
