I'm competent with the basics so there's no issue with that. I'd rather not have a complete moron who'd just hinder my progress and or undo what was taught to me by the General, but.. You should wear them always, unless you wish to develop the right callouses by wielding a wooden blade for a while. You risk permanent damage otherwise.

Though your determination is admirable, worthy of a true samurai, be cautious and do not push yourself to learn too quickly. You will make mistakes at times, which is to be expected. The greatest of swordsmen do.
